Today we had a visit from the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo. We took an imaginary journey to the Rain Forest! We learned about the orangutan that lives in the Indonesian Rain Forest. Students had LIVE animal visits from a parrot, hedgehog, and millipede. Don't forget to visit the zoo this spring and summer. Thanks to the Dekko foundation who made this visit possible!

Gummy Worms and Real Worms
Ms. Munk helped us compare and contrast real worms and gummy worms. The students observed, touched, and measured both worms. They recorded the results on paper before enjoying the gummy worm. We also experimented with how the worms responded to light!

Beat the Calculator!
Students are playing a game called "Beat the Calculator". One student is completing a math fact on paper and the other is solving the same problem with a calculator. Students quickly found that it is much faster to do math facts from memory than to use a calculator!

WORMS!
We've been studying animals and animal habitats. Mrs. Munk from the Kendallville Library, brought a worm bin so that we could study the worms habitats. It has been fun sharing the worms with the other 1st grade classrooms.

Happy 100th Day of School
We had a blast today. It was so fun to dress up and see all the students dressed like they were 100 years old. We started the morning by making a 100th Day Book Mark and writing our numbers to 100. During Daily 5, students wrote about what they would do with $100! It was interesting to see what students think $100 will buy. We then made predictions and had to determine if we thought we could get to the center of a Tootsie Pop in more or less than 100 licks. We kept track by tallying our licks. WOW! This activity was so much fun. I loved hearing all the students count and lick at the same time! After 300 licks most students gave up and decided to bite into the sucker! During Writer's Workshop, the students wrote about they will be doing when they are 100 years old. These were also fun to read. Students selected their favorite story from the 100th day and that one will be hanging in the hallway. At math, students had to find 100 Hershey Kisses hidden around the room. Once they were all found they had to figure out how to divide them equally between all 20 students. We ended the day making our 100th Day Trail Mix. Thank you to all the students who donated items to make this special for the students. It was a BLAST!
