BRRRR.....It's Cold Outside!

It's been too cold to go outside so we have been staying in for recess!

Story Problems

Last week, students used PicCollege to create story problems. They did an awesome job of wrote out the story problem in their math journal before typing it into PicCollege. They had to remember to ask a question at the end. Students had the choice to write an addition or subtraction problem. Here are a few samples...

Contraction Surgery

Students pretended they were "Word Doctors" this week. They preformed word surgery complete with rubber gloves and a face mask.  Students used scissors as their scalpel as they cut apart words and created contractions complete with a band aide as the apostrophe. Students then had to read the new words they created!

Book Buddies - Author's Purpose and Math Games

This week at Book Buddies, students were divided into two groups. One group worked with Mrs. Munk on figuring out the author's purpose when reading. They looked at many different books and decided if it was written to persuade, inform, or entertain. The other group read More or Less by Stuart Murphy. They played a dice game where they were adding and subtracting numbers.

Polar Express Day

Students had a Polar Express Day before Christmas break. All week long we had been using the Polar Express book by Chris Van Allsburg during Daily 5 and writing. On Friday,  everyone wore P.J's and we watched the Polar Express while enjoying donuts, hot chocolate, marshmallows, and candy canes. Students also made "reindeer food" during the morning activities. In the afternoon we had our Character Counts convocation where the kindergarten-second graders surprised the rest of the students with a flash mob.

Christmas Presents

Students made thumb print reindeer ornaments for their parents this year for Christmas. Not sure why I didn't take a picture of a finished ornament but trust me they were very cute. They also made a  video card for parents this year using the "stkr.it" app on the iPod.
