2014-2015 School Year

Families,

Welcome to another school year. Our family will be growing soon and our third child is expected to arrive at the beginning of September. We are thrilled to add another addition to our family and I will be taking some time off from the classroom. I'll return to the classroom and regular blogging next year.

Addition Videos with Shadow Puppets

Students created addition videos by rolling four dice and making a double digit addition problem. They took pictures of the dice and put them together into these videos using Shadow Puppets. They had a blast becoming the "teachers" and I think they did a great job. Here is just one sample video from a student, make sure to look at your child's work on KidBlog.

Shadow Puppet - Merry Lea Field Trip

Students also used the app Shadow Puppet to complete a project explaining our recent trip to Merry Lea Environmental Center. Students took pictures from the trip and added sentences to them by using the app Pic Wall. Once they were finished with the slides they put them into Shadow Puppet to explain what happened on the trip. Here is one student sample, more samples can be found by visiting our KidBlog page.

Shadow Puppet

We've been exploring a new app called Shadow Puppet. Students did a project this week that used the app. We did a math project where the students used an app called Label Box to divide shapes into equal parts. They took the slides from this app and put them into Shadow Puppet which allowed them to explain how they divided each shape. Here is just one student sample below, remember to check for your child's work on KidBlog.

Virtual Field Trip

We took a virtual field trip today called "The Journey of Greek Yogurt from Farm to Fridge" from Discovery Education. We met Hamdi Ulukaya founder of the Chobani factory in New York. He took questions from students via the web and took us inside his factory. After we watched the virtual field trip students created a slide demonstrating what they learned in Pic Wall. They could draw a picture on paper or create a picture in Doodle Buddy to include in the slide. Once students were finished they posted the slide in KidBlog. I posted just one sample a student created, don't forget to check KidBlog to see your child's work. Once we finished we enjoyed yogurt samples supplied by Mr. Pine! YUM!

Vending Machine Math

Students practiced adding money and making change this week by playing vending machine math games. Yesterday, students looked at the vending machine poster and selected two items to purchase. They were required to take pictures of the items they wanted in the Pic Wall app.  Once they had the pictures, they needed to write a sentence telling me what two items they picked along with the price and how much the items cost together. Here is one example: (make sure to check KidBlog for your child's poster)

Today, some students pretended to be the customer and were given a bag a money to purchase items from the vending machine. Other students pretended to be the vending machine and they had to return the correct amount of change to the customer. Here are a few pictures of students working.

Fairy Tales

Today students finished writing their own fairy tales. We've spent weeks learning about the elements of fairy tales and folk tales by reading many different versions of Cinderella, The Little Red Hen, The Three Little Pigs, and Jack and the Bean Stalk. Today, students shared their masterpieces with each other in our publishing party!

Last Friday, students searched the room for Easter candy. Once they found 10 pieces of candy, they had to sort the treats into two groups - chocolate and not chocolate. Mystery 3-D Shapes

This week students learned about 3-D shapes. They made video riddles using the app Chatter Pix Kids.  Students first took a picture of their 3-D shape and then gave the class clues about their shape based on the shape's attributes. Finally students disguised their shape by adding stickers to the video. We had so much fun trying to guess each shape. All of the videos are posted on Kid Blog if you would like to see your child's creation. Some students worked in pairs so if you don't see the video posted to their page, just look at their partner's page.

Junior Achievement

This week in Junior Achievement students learned about needs and wants. Students wrote a letter to a family member at home asking for either a need or a want. They told their family member why they wanted the item and that they would do some work to earn the item. Many students asked for puppies...they were also reminded that sometimes when we ask for something the answer is no! :)

Electrical Safety

We had a visit from Noble County REMC this week. We learned about staying safe with electricity inside our houses and how to stay safe outside when around electricity. The students made posters in Pic College to demonstrate one safety tip they learned Look at KidBlog to see your child's safety tip poster.

Polygons

Today students made polygons with straws and twisty ties. They learned 4 facts about polygons that are always true.
1. Sides of a polygon are all straight.
2. Polygons have corners where two sides meet.
3. The sides meet only at their ends.
4. The sides are connected. They do not have gaps.

Once students created their own polygon, they took a picture of the shape they made in Pic College. Students had to tell why they KNEW the shape they made was indeed a polygon. Check out the sample below. You can also find your child's work on our KidBlog page.
